We've BEGUN!

Downpour now offers an after school program called WASH (stands for Wednesday After School Hours). The staff arrives at 2pm, then we go pick up the students as schools get out. We currently pick up at Avery Trace Middle School, Cookeville High School, and Upperman High School. We will expand as resources allow.

When students arrive it's time for snacks, fellowship and fun provided by our Jr. High pastors, Kayla and Walter. At 4:45PM we start Study Time. This is a special time where the students do their homework, getting tutoring help, work on basic skills/drills, and get help planning for their future.

We serve dinner for all at 6:15 until about 6:50 when Jen begins the countdown to worship!

Our regular Wednesday night worship services go from 7:00 until 8:15pm.

Our first few weeks have gone well, and we've had donations of money, computers, TVs, and time! Austin, aka "The Librarian", aka "Saskwatch" has been getting a feel for the students' interests in reading, and he's making his plans. Bwooohahaahahaa..

We still need some folks to help students with their math homework. It's mostly algebra.

Some Feedback

We've already gotten some great feedback from the students. They appreciate the time and distraction-free environment to get their stuff done. They also said it was fun to do their homework with their friends. It made it not so much of a chore. THAT'S what we like to hear!

Death by Safey Scissors

Heather Gerfen plays around at Downpour

Youth worker, Heather Gerfen, was offed during the setup of The Tomb, April 24th, 2009. She was taken by surprise when Youth Pastor's wife, Jennifer Driller, allegedly tossed the scissors down from the top of the stairs to the bottom where Heather was working.

According to sources, Heather apparently asked for the scissors to clip off an errant piece of garbage bag that she was tacking to the walls to create the dark atmosphere of The Tomb. Jennifer responded by throwing the scissors to her, but Heather couldn't see - because it was dark - and the scissors caught her right in the chest.

"They were just safety scissors. She should have been paying attention," said Ms. Driller. Some onlookers were horrified. Others were hysterical with laughter. Ms. Driller showed a tasteless sense of humor and was the one responsible for the photo. Pastor Dennis was indifferent. When asked about the incident, he barked an order to keep working. "We can't be playing around like this or we'll be here all night!" he was heard to say repeatedly.

Work on The Tomb continued as students carelessly moved the body aside and out of the way.

Reportedly the event went off without further incident and was considered a rousing success by all attendees.
